Jekyll Island

Dec 2nd-3rd, 2024

Jekyll Island, Georgia, was a pleasant surprise. We decided to stop there on our way to Florida to break up the long drive into two parts. After some research, Pascal found this campground, located almost halfway between Hilton Head Island and our next destination, Cape Canaveral. Once we arrived, we wished we had planned to stay at least one more night, if not longer.

The road to the island continues the theme we’ve been seeing so far, with swamps and water reeds. Then, you’re greeted by a road lined with palm trees before actually reaching the island.

Once there, Spanish moss welcomes you.

Our campground was located just across from Driftwood Beach. What an amazing find! TripAdvisor named Driftwood Beach the No. 8 best beach in the United States for this year’s Travelers’ Choice Awards. We completely understood why it made the list. 😉

The best way to describe the feeling you get once on the beach would be “unexpected” followed by “wow-ed.” It’s unexpected because I thought we would find just some pieces of wood scattered around the beach, pushed by the waves. I didn’t expect to find full trees—some still standing, others fallen with their roots protruding from the sand, and others broken into pieces. Driftwood Beach is a maritime forest that has been gradually overtaken by the sea.

The landscape changes dramatically when the tide is high. We returned the next morning to find a “forest” submerged in water. We couldn’t walk far, but it was amazing to see and have a mental “before and after” picture of Driftwood Beach.

Besides this amazing beach, we took walks with Meeko under the moss-covered trees and explored the historic city. We noticed plenty of bike paths and a golf course. We’d like to return eventually to enjoy this little island for a longer stay. In the meantime, stay tuned for our adventures at Cape Canaveral.

À tantôt!
