Carlsbad Caverns National Park was a recommendation from another Canadian that we met at the campground in Marfa, a retired professional photographer that visited Marfa once and ended up spending his winters there for the past 15 years. He is not the only Canadian we met that visited a place in US and ended up liking it so much, they keep going back again and again. It makes us wonder if we will find ourselves in a similar situation? Perfect weather all year long is attractive !
Anyway, before visiting the Carlsbad Caverns, we needed to find a place to spend the night that was not too far. We ended up at Chosa Campground, just a big square patch of land not too far from the caverns. 1st come 1st served. We really enjoy these boondocking spots where it’s quiet, the sky at night is so dark and full of stars and you feel completely disconnected from the population. You sleep there for free and it’s a very peaceful experience pretty much every time.

We did 3+ hours (x2 for back and forth) out of our way to visit these caverns and it was totally worth it. It’s not like any other we did in the past! When you read the description, that they are part of Unesco patrimony next to the Taj Mahal you think there must be an exaggeration. Then you visit, and you understand why. You go 750ft (228m) deep and end-up in a quite mind blowing spectacular place with huge stalactites and stalagmites everywhere. Our pictures doesn’t give justice but it does give a good idea.
You feel the “weight” of the mountain on your shoulders once you realize just how deep inside it you are! Sometimes you look up, and the ceiling is 350 feet (106 meters) high. Other times, you look down and see another level 75 feet (23 meters) below you. Our 2 km walk through the caverns revealed something new at every step.
Head to our Youtube channel for more videos from the cave.
À tantôt!
