San Antonio

Jan 24 – 26th, 2025

San Antonio was a nice surprise! Our friends from Houston highly recommended the River Walk and told us where to get the best margarita ever… and it did not disappoint.

We arrived in San Antonio on a Friday afternoon. Our campground was located 15 minutes from downtown, so after setting up camp, we took Meeko and headed toward the River Walk — a network of winding pathways and bridges flanking the river that flows through downtown San Antonio:

Walking along the river, there’s a nice vibe to it, with all the small restaurants and bars, and people chatting and having a good time. From time to time, you’d see a small boat with a guide, speaking loud enough to catch bits of the area’s history. Everywhere you look, there’s a hidden alley leading away from the river. I could get lost in those alleys for days, discovering what else is “hidden” on the walls, what piece of forgotten history lies somewhere beyond the tourist attractions.

We didn’t visit it at night, but we saw some photos from friends: the River Walk transforms under the lights hidden in the trees, reflecting off the small waves of the water below. I guess we have to go back 🙂

The next day, we visited the Alamo. It is the most important historical site in Texas and kept coming up as the top sightseeing spot in San Antonio.

Without sounding judgmental and with no intention of offending anyone: we were not that impressed. I guess it was hard for us to imagine the glory of that mission or truly feel the impact that place had on shaping the history of Texas, just by looking at some empty walls.

What we found more interesting, was the collection donated by Phil Collins (the musician) to the Alamo. Phil Collins built the collection over several decades, purchasing some items and even discovering some others just steps away from the Alamo itself. In the summer of 2014, Collins generously donated his priceless collection of Alamo and Texana artifacts to the Texas General Land Office, guardian of the Alamo on behalf of the people of Texas.

Here are some photos:

While visiting the Alamo, there was a gun demonstration:
